Baton Rouge area - economic contribution
ExxonMobil’s success in the energy and petrochemical industries makes it possible for us to contribute to the well-being of the local areas where we create jobs opportunities, pay taxes and provide products.
job opportunities
As one of the largest private employers in East Baton Rouge Parish, we provide jobs for more than 5,200 people − 3,400 employees and almost 1,800 contractors. Each employee and contractor job supports nearly six additional jobs. That’s more than 31,200 people and their families in Louisiana who are indirectly impacted by our business.
We hire almost all of our operations staff locally. Since about 25 percent of our operators will be retirement eligible within the next five years, we hired 30 mechanical apprentices in 2006, and anticipate hiring a similar number each year for the next several years.
We also anticipate hiring about 30 new professionals each year for the next several years, paying special attention to Louisiana colleges and universities.
taxes
In addition to employees’ individual taxes, ExxonMobil paid 10 percent of all property taxes collected in East Baton Rouge Parish in 2005, which makes us the largest single taxpayer in the parish. We also paid approximately $15.4 million in city/parish sales and use tax in 2005, which accounts for more than 22 percent of total sales and use tax paid in the parish.
our products
People use our products from the time they get up in the morning to the time they go to bed at night. Many of ExxonMobil’s products, like those made with plastic or special rubbers, cost less to produce, are recyclable and durable. This makes your everyday convenience items less expensive and longer lasting.
