higher education
ExxonMobil supports numerous programs to encourage women and minorities to pursue math and science related fields.
The programmatic focus of our higher education initiatives is on supporting programs that improve teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In 2007, ExxonMobil provided $37.1 million worldwide to colleges and universities and other organizations that support higher education
. Of this amount, more than $32.5 million benefited higher education within the United States.
Our major financial support for higher education in the U.S. is the Educational Matching Gift Program offered through the ExxonMobil Foundation. This program encourages and assists ExxonMobil employees and retirees in their personal giving to higher education by providing a $3-for-$1 matching program. In 2007, we granted more than $25.0 million in matching funds to more than 900 colleges and universities, the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the American Indian College Fund.
In the U.S., ExxonMobil also supports programs that seek to improve career opportunities for minorities and women. We continue to be a major supporter of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME), as a leader in the national effort to increase the representation of minority men and women in engineering and technology, math and science-based careers. Support continues for Mathematical Association of America's Project NExT, a professional development program for newly-minted PhD math professors.
More than $1.7 million was provided to 84 colleges and universities in the U.S. for use by academic departments and are unrestricted for educational use. In Kazakhstan, ExxonMobil helped establish a Geoscience Learning Center at the Oil and Gas Institute of the national university.
