Located on the banks of the Yarra River, on Francis Street in the western suburbs of Melbourne, the Yarraville Terminal has operated since 1926.
The Yarraville Terminal is the Company’s primary fuels distribution terminal for petrol, diesel and heating oil in Victoria. In addition it houses the head office for ExxonMobil's lubricants personnel in Australia and the Company's lube oil blend plant which manufactures finished lubricants for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
Yarraville Terminal operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Fuels and lubricants are primarily distributed from Yarraville by barge and road tanker.
ExxonMobil operates the fuel storage and truck load-out facilities at the Terminal in joint ownership with BP.
There are thirty refined product storage tanks at Yarraville with a storage capacity of 170 million litres. These tanks are used for bulk storage of fuel products arriving from Mobil Altona Refinery and Shell Geelong Refinery (via pipeline) and from overseas/interstate (via ship). The storage tanks are located in the "Tank Farm" on the western side of the Terminal.
At the tank truck fill stand up to eight trucks can be loaded simultaneously with various fuels stored in the tank farm.
Each year approximately 3.5 billion litres of bulk refined product is delivered by a contract trucking fleet to customers in Victoria and southern NSW.
In addition there are 120 smaller tanks, on the southern side of the terminal, which are used for the storage and blending of lubricant products.
Lubricants
Finished lubricants are manufactured from lubricating basestocks using an in-line blender and blending tanks.
Blending over 80 million litres of product every year, Yarraville's Lube Oil Blend Plant is the largest and one of the most efficient blend plants for the industry in Australia.
Packaged lubricants are loaded on site, with 20 - 25 trucks and up to eight shipping containers being filled and dispatched every day to all states, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
The lube oil and blend plant is supported by a fully automated state-of-the-art random stacked warehouse. The high-rise warehouse can store up to 6,000 pallets.
Complying with Statutory Requirements
Victorian Government regulations require that the Yarraville Terminal is registered as a Major Hazard Facility because it stores, handles and processes large quantities of flammable products. In line with this, a detailed Safety Case has been developed, identifying risks associated with potential major incidents in Yarraville's operation and putting in place procedures to ensure these risks are reduced to the maximum extent practicable.
The site operates under an environmental licence issued by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
