ExxonMobil's affiliate Mobil Exploration Producing Australia Pty Ltd (MEPA)
has a 35 per cent interest in the Griffin oil field. Griffin is located in the
offshore Carnarvon Basin on the North West Shelf of Australia, almost 70
kilometres north-west of Onslow. The Griffin field was discovered in 1989 and
commenced production in January 1994.
Griffin is operated by
BHP Billiton and consists of a floating production, storage and offloading
facility (FPSO). Oil and gas from the Griffin field is produced through the
purpose built vessel named the "Griffin Venture". The vessel processes the
fluids, stores the oil, and exports the associated gas through a 68 kilometre
pipeline to shore. Oil is also delivered to shuttle tankers via a floating
hose.
The produced gas is sold into the Western Australia
domestic market.
