| | | A Proud History in Australia | |
ExxonMobil Australia is the oldest petroleum company operating in
Australia. Our proud history dates back more than 110 years, to when Mobil Oil
Australia, through its predecessor company, Vacuum Oil, opened its first
branch in Queen Street, Melbourne in February 1895. Esso Australia's origins
go back to late 1927 when the Union Oil Company of California and the Atlantic
Refining Company decided to combine to enter the Australian and New Zealand
markets.
In December 1998, the proposed global merger of
Exxon Corporation and Mobil Oil Corporation was announced. The merger was
completed on November 30, 1999 with the creation of the Exxon Mobil
Corporation.
Within Australia this provided opportunities
to rationalise resources whilst retaining the Mobil and Esso brands. Today,
ExxonMobil in Australia is part of the world's premier petroleum and
petrochemical company.
