MELBOURNE: ExxonMobil subsidiary, Mobil
Australia Resources Company Pty Ltd, confirmed today the details of a
successful bid for an offshore block in Western Australia, in the latest
Australian exploration acreage gazettal.
The successful bid
was made by a joint venture comprising subsidiaries of ExxonMobil (25%),
Chevron (50% and operator), and Shell (25%).
The block,
which comprises 2,650 square kilometres, is located in the Carnarvon Basin off
the north west of Western Australia, 100 kilometres northwest of Barrow
Island, in water depths ranging from 900 to 1300 metres. The block is in close
proximity to the Gorgon and Jansz fields which ExxonMobil and its joint
venture partners are working to commercialise.
ExxonMobil
Exploration Vice President for Asia Pacific, Stephen Greenlee, said that the
company was pleased that the Joint Venture had been awarded the exploration
rights for block W05-16.
“The successful acquisition of
exploration rights for W05-16 represents an important addition to ExxonMobil’s
exploration activities in Australia and is aligned with our global approach of
pursuing world class exploration opportunities,” he said.
"The acreage also gives us the opportunity to build on our strong track record
in the region – including the ExxonMobil discovery of the Jansz field in
2000,” Mr Greenlee said.
ExxonMobil Australia Chairman,
Mark Nolan, noted that the awarding of the exploration rights extended the
company’s interests and activities in Australia.
“This
award expands our significant presence in Australia. In particular, it
reinforces ExxonMobil’s commitment to bringing our industry-leading technical
expertise to exploration opportunities in Australia - opportunities which have
the potential to make further major contributions to the Australian and
Western Australian economies,” Mr Nolan said.
