ExxonMobil takes a proactive approach to avoid contamination of the
environment. Whether unloading diesel from supply vessels, moving oil and
chemicals from containers or transporting product via pipelines on and
offshore, we strive to prevent spilling anything into the sea or on land.
ExxonMobil has oil spill response teams at each of our facilities, trained to
handle any spill promptly and efficiently. Each team member's emergency role
is clearly defined in ExxonMobil's oil spill response plan. The main objective
of the plan is to minimise the environmental impact of a spill through the
most appropriate control strategy for the situation. The plan contains details
of strategies for oil containment, dispersal or cleanup as well as for
personnel safety and welfare, environmental protection, communications, legal
issues, accounting and incident recording.
ExxonMobil is
represented on the Marine Board of Victoria's Oil Spill Committees and, in the
unlikely event of a major spill, we have access to additional resources such
the industry’s mutual aid cooperative and the Geelong-based Australian Marine
Oil Spill Centre (AMOSC). International resources based in Singapore and
Southhampton (UK) can also be called upon, as well as Federal, Victorian and
other State Government resources.
